In Indian families, the first ghee made from a cow's milk after giving birth to a calf is considered sacred and saved for worship. I feel fortunate to come from a family where the culture still values the presence of cows.
Whenever a new calf is born, I have witnessed my mother and grandmother partake in a ritual. Intrigued by their actions, I sought to understand the reason behind collecting ghee in a jar and prohibiting anyone from consuming it. Seeking answers, I approached my grandmother who informed me that the initial milk ghee is gathered for Budhi Nagin, a deity residing in Serolsar Lake.
The story of Buddi Nagin, also known as Budhi Nagin, originates from the Seraj region in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. She possessed certain powers bestowed upon her by Durga Maa, a form of Nava Durga. Buddi Nagin later got married in the Suket area, which is now referred to as Karsog district in Himachal Pradesh.
Buddhi Nagin went to the local water territory of the Satluj River. She told her mother not to wake her children while she was away. Her children were sleeping in a basket made of husks in the kitchen. In the past, it was common for people to keep their children in husk baskets before baby prams became popular.
Her mother became concerned when the children slept for an extended period without waking up. Disregarding Budhi Nagin's instructions, her mother decided to remove the blanket. To her surprise, she discovered 5-6 snakes hidden within it. Filled with fear, she quickly grabbed some ash from the kitchen and threw it on the snakes. The snakes scattered in various directions, and it is speculated that they were forgotten about after this incident.
Upon Buddha Nagin's return, she was devastated to discover that her children were no longer present. Overwhelmed with sorrow, she made the decision to depart from the village. In the Bhiuri village of Karsog, a small stone statue continues to be revered in the very house that Buddha Nagin once resided in.
It is impossible to reconstruct or refurbish this tiny house. Budhi Nagin departed from the house and arrived at Serolsar Lake, located near Jalori Pass in the Banjar Valley of Kullu District in Himachal Pradesh.
Naga Worship
According to local beliefs, Buddhi Nagin is considered the mother of Nagdev, the deity of snakes. The people in the region associate Nagas with Shiva. Each Naga has its own designated area and village, which are named after them, such as Chowasi Nag, Hungru Nag, and Jhakad Nag.
Within these villages, there are numerous stunning temples that embrace the unique Himachali architectural style. These temples are adorned with exquisite wooden carvings. Annually, Nag Devtas, priests, and villagers come together to tour their surroundings. The locals generously offer donations to the Nagas in various forms. Additionally, they partake in traditional Himachali dances known as Nati.
Situated amidst captivating fields, the lake offers a breathtaking experience with its stunning sunset and a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains from every angle.
According to the tale, Buddhi Nagin arrived at Serolsar Lake and settled on a large rock. In the vicinity, there were 60 young girls known as Joginis or Yoginis, who were heading towards Shikari Devi in Mandi or Jalori Jot. They noticed Buddhi Nagin seated at Serolsar Lake and decided to approach her. The Joginis suggested playing a game together.
The individuals believed that they could easily overcome her due to her age. They made an agreement that if Budhi Nagin emerged victorious in the game, she would acknowledge this location as her sacred site. Conversely, if the Joginis emerged triumphant, she would depart from this place.
During the game, a girl cheated which angered Buddi Nagin greatly. As a result, she placed a curse on the girl, transforming her into a permanent small bird and giving her the responsibility of cleaning a small water body. This small bird is now referred to as Abhi Chidiya.
After winning the game, Buddi Nagin made the choice to stay in this place permanently. While she was on her way, she was holding a small pot. Unfortunately, the pot slipped from her hands while she was exploring Serolsar, resulting in the creation of a lake right at that spot. This is the story behind the formation of the lake.
The rock where Buddi Nagin was seated is currently recognized as Kala Pathar.
Pandava Tale
Following their banishment, the Pandavas arrived at Jalori Pass and eventually came across Serolsar Lake. They decided to cultivate rice in the area surrounding the lake. According to the story, Buddi Nagin appeared before them and then returned to the lake.
The Pandavas retrieved the statue of her from the lake and placed it on the shore. They constructed a small shrine for her on the edge of the lake. Over the years, it has undergone multiple renovations. The present temple is the fourth one following the renovations.
Visitors to the Budhi Nagin Temple in Mandi and Kullu region have a tradition of offering ghee to Budhi Nagin, who is considered the mother of all Nag Devta in the area. Budhi Nagin had a strong affection for cows, hence why people bring ghee as an offering to her. According to the belief, when ghee is poured inside the temple, it is believed to flow directly to the center of the lake where Budhi Nagin is believed to reside.
Individuals bring large quantities of ghee to both the temple and the lake. Once a year, the Nagdevas from the surrounding area gather to visit Budhi Nagin, particularly during special events. These special occasions are determined and anticipated by the local priests.
The temple is not open during the winter because it receives a significant amount of snowfall.

The true depth of Serolsar Lake remains a mystery to all.
Here is another intriguing story filled with mystery. One day, a Brahmin and his family were walking near a lake when he accidentally fell in. Despite the efforts of his family, they were unable to rescue him. Surprisingly, after a span of three years, the Brahmin returned from the lake. It turns out that he had made a promise to Budhi Nagin, a mystical serpent, not to disclose her existence to anyone.
His family persistently questioned him about his whereabouts and how he managed to survive. Eventually, Brahmin confessed the truth. He explained that when he fell into the lake, he sank to the bottom where he was rescued by Buddi Nagin. According to him, she resides in a magnificent golden palace beneath the lake. He also mentioned witnessing numerous containers of milk while she was busy churning curd.
After he revealed the truth, he passed away. The residents of the village noticed strange happenings when they visited the lake. It was deduced that Buddi Nagin desired for the lake to remain undisturbed and maintained in a pristine condition. In reality, the lake is perpetually clean, without a single leaf present within its waters.
