In Indian culture, it is customary to save the first ghee made from a cow's milk for worship when a cow gives birth to a calf. Being born into a family where cows are still valued is a blessing.
Whenever a new calf is born, I have observed my mother and grandmother performing a customary practice. Intrigued by the ritual of collecting ghee in a jar and the prohibition against consuming from that specific jar, I approached my grandmother seeking an explanation. It was during this conversation that I discovered that the initial milk ghee was gathered for Budhi Nagin in Serolsar Lake.
The story of Budhi Nagin begins in the Seraj region of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh. She was renowned as Buddi Nagin and was believed to have been bestowed with certain powers from Durga Maa, a form of Nava Durga. Budhi Nagin eventually got married in the Suket area, which is now known as Karsog district in Himachal Pradesh.
Buddhi Nagin ventured close to the local water territory of the Satluj River. She told her mother not to disturb her children while she was away. Her children were peacefully sleeping in a basket made of husks, a common practice before the introduction of baby prams.
After a period of time, the mother became concerned because the children had been sleeping for an extended period without waking up. Disregarding the advice given by Budhi Nagin, the mother decided to pick up the blanket. To her surprise, she discovered 5-6 snakes hidden within it. Feeling afraid, she quickly grabbed some ash from the kitchen and threw it on the snakes. Startled, the snakes scattered in various directions. It is believed that they were not seen or heard from again after this incident.
After Buddha Nagin returned, she was filled with sadness to discover that her children had left. She made the decision to depart from the village. In the Bhiuri village of Karsog, there is a house where Buddha Nagin resided, and inside it, a small stone statue is still revered.
It is not possible to reconstruct or refurbish this tiny house. Budhi Nagin departed from the house and arrived at Serolsar Lake, located near Jalori Pass in the Banjar Valley of Kullu District in Himachal Pradesh.
Naga worship is centered around the belief that Buddhi Nagin is the mother of Nagdev, the deity associated with snakes. The people in the region believe that Nagas have a connection with Shiva. Each Naga is associated with a specific area and village, which are named after them, such as Chowasi Nag, Hungru Nag, and Jhakad Nag.
In the villages, there are numerous stunning temples built with the traditional architecture of Himachal Pradesh. These temples are adorned with exquisite wooden carvings. Annually, the Nag Devtas, priests, and villagers come together to tour the region. People generously make donations to the Nagas in various forms. Additionally, they partake in the local Himachali dance known as Nati.
The mesmerizing meadows surround the lake, which is situated right in the middle. It is a perfect spot to witness the breathtaking sunset and marvel at the panoramic view of the mountains from every angle.
According to the legend, Buddhi Nagin arrived at Serolsar Lake and settled on a large stone. At that time, there were 60 young girls known as Joginis or Yoginis. Some of them were heading to Shikari Devi in Mandi, while others were going to Jalori Jot. When they noticed Buddhi Nagin sitting in Serolsar Lake, the Joginis approached her and proposed playing a game together.
The individuals believed that they would have no trouble defeating her due to her old age. A decision was made that if Budhi Nagin emerges victorious in the game, she will consider this location sacred. Conversely, if the Joginis win, she will depart from this place.
During the game, a girl resorted to cheating, causing Buddi Nagin to become extremely angry. As a punishment, she cursed the girl to forever transform into a small bird and gave her the responsibility of cleaning a small water body. This transformed bird is now referred to as Abhi Chidiya.
After winning the game, Buddi Nagin made the decision to make this place her permanent home. She had a small pot with her when she left her house. While wandering around in Serolsar, the pot accidentally slipped from her grasp, resulting in a lake forming right at that very spot. And that's how the lake came into existence.
The rock where Buddi Nagin was seated is currently referred to as Kala Pathar.
The Pandavas, who were banished, arrived at Jalori Pass and discovered Serolsar Lake. They decided to cultivate rice in the vicinity of the lake. A mythical creature known as Buddi Nagin appeared before them and then returned to the lake.
The Pandavas retrieved the statue of her from the lake and placed it outside the lake. They constructed a small shrine for her on the shores of the lake. Since then, it has undergone several renovations. The present temple is the fourth one after the renovations.
Visitors to the Budhi Nagin Temple in the Mandi and Kullu region have a tradition of offering ghee. Budhi Nagin, who is revered as the mother of all the Nag Devta in the area, had a strong affinity for cows. As a way to honor her, people bring ghee to her temple. It is believed that when ghee is poured inside the temple, it reaches the heart of the lake where Budhi Nagin resides.

There is a lack of knowledge regarding the exact depth of Serolsar Lake, making it a mysterious and intriguing natural feature.
Here is another intriguing tale. A Brahmin and his family were enjoying a leisurely walk near the lake when he accidentally fell into the water. Despite their efforts, his family was unable to rescue him. Surprisingly, after a period of three years, the Brahmin mysteriously returned from the lake. The reason behind his return was a promise he made to Budhi Nagin, a mysterious serpent-like creature, who requested him to keep their encounter a secret from everyone.
His relatives persistently questioned him, repeatedly asking, "Where did you go?" and "How did you manage to survive?" Eventually, the Brahmin told the truth. He explained that when he fell into the lake, he descended to the lake's bed and was rescued by Buddi Nagin. According to him, she resides in a magnificent golden palace in that location. He also mentioned witnessing numerous containers of milk while she was busy churning curd.
After revealing the truth, he immediately passed away. The inhabitants of the village gathered at the lake and witnessed a series of unexplained events. It was deduced that Buddi Nagin desired for the lake to remain undisturbed and in a pristine condition. True to its reputation, the lake remained impeccably clean, devoid of any leaves or debris.
