During my childhood camping trips, I have vivid memories of my parents never forgetting to pack an old REI fleece blanket in a beautiful forest green color. This blanket has been through numerous adventures over the years, ranging from being used for picnics on dusty trails to providing shelter during hail storms, and even sustaining burn holes from campfire embers.

Since the creation of that blanket, there have been significant advancements in technology, materials, and design. However, I hold a deep sentimental attachment to it, as it has accompanied me on countless adventures throughout the years.

In order for an outdoor blanket to be considered good, it should possess qualities such as warmth, portability, durability, and ease of cleaning. The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket has been specifically created to incorporate advanced materials and construction techniques used in the outdoor gear industry, resulting in the perfect blanket for everyday use.

To evaluate this puffy blanket, I decided to take it with me on various outdoor activities. I tested it extensively by using it during snowshoeing and casual ski touring in the Wasatch Mountain Range, as well as during winter camping in red rock deserts.

In this review, I will provide my sincere thoughts on the Rumpl Blanket after using it in various real-life situations. I aim to clarify its strengths, weaknesses, and determine if it's worth buying for your upcoming outdoor escapades.

Initial thoughts on the Rumpl blanket are that it feels incredibly smooth when taken out of its packaging. The face fabric, made of woven polyester, has a sleek and silky texture that offers almost no resistance when touched. It resembles the fabric used in modern down sleeping bags, which is not surprising given that these blankets aim to include elements from high-performance outdoor equipment.

The blanket was neatly packaged in a special bag. I appreciate that the bag has the same pattern as the blanket. However, it's worth mentioning that it's difficult to roll the blanket back up as neatly as it was when it arrived. I've discovered that it's much simpler to just stuff it into the bag without folding or rolling it.

The Rumpl blanket is specifically advertised as a blanket for outdoor activities such as camping, picnics, and concerts. Its design clearly reflects this purpose. The blanket stands out for its ability to provide warmth, resistance to water, and ease of packing. Additionally, it is known for its durability and convenience when it comes to cleaning.

This blanket may not be everyone's preference for using at home, and there may be individuals who find it difficult to justify spending such a significant amount on a basic blanket. In essence, this blanket is designed for those who desire a higher quality option than a regular picnic blanket and one that can withstand outdoor use.

Who is Rumpl?

Rumpl is a company that was founded with the intention of incorporating the advanced materials and designs used in outdoor gear into a blanket suitable for various everyday activities. The concept for this innovative product originated when the founders of Rumpl found themselves stuck in their van during a skiing and surfing expedition and had to rely on their sleeping bags to keep warm until assistance arrived.

The concept of a "sleeping bag blanket" was inspired by this particular experience, which involves incorporating advanced materials typically found in outdoor gear into a design that is specifically tailored for regular, everyday use.

Established in 2014, Rumpl's goal is to revolutionize blankets by utilizing advanced materials and creative designs. Their most popular item is the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket.

What I appreciate about this brand is their dedication to sustainability and their efforts to minimize their negative effect on the environment and carbon emissions. Outdoor gear is commonly manufactured in ways that harm the very places we enjoy exploring. Thankfully, an increasing number of brands are acknowledging this contradiction and are adopting new practices to reduce waste and promote transparency in their operations.

Rumpl contributes 1% of their total income (excluding profit) to support environmental non-profit organizations. In the year 2019, they also completely redesigned their entire range of products to be made exclusively from 100% recycled materials.

Review of the Rumpl Blanket

When evaluating the effectiveness of the Original Puffy Blanket, it is crucial to remember its purpose. This blanket is specifically designed to utilize advanced materials in order to create a practical and versatile everyday blanket that is specifically tailored for outdoor activities.

This item falls in the middle ground between an extremely comfortable throw blanket for home use and an ultralight backpacking quilt for long journeys in remote areas. It is most suitable for casual outdoor activities.

I have discovered that this blanket is perfect for keeping in the car, making it convenient for various activities such as picnics, car camping, outdoor concerts, or simply adding an extra layer during chilly morning drives.

The blanket is constructed with a 30-denier ripstop polyester for its outer shell. The material used on both sides of the blanket is also this polyester. It closely resembles the fabric commonly used in modern sleeping bags, being thin, smooth, and lightweight.

The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket is made with a shell that contains a hollow-fiber synthetic insulation, which provides warmth. Although synthetic insulation is not as light or easy to pack as down, it is more effective when exposed to moisture and is also more affordable. However, if you prefer the lightweight properties of down fill, Rumpl does offer a down puffy blanket for twice the price.

The blanket is constructed using recycled materials from water bottles, both in its outer shell and insulation. Rumpl claims that the one-person blanket is made from 60 water bottles, while the two-person size utilizes 100. As someone who prioritizes purchasing items made from sustainable or recycled materials, it is satisfying to find this feature in the blanket.

The aesthetic aspect that I particularly love about the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket is the extensive selection of colors and designs available. It's truly impressive how many options there are to choose from, and you can easily get lost scrolling through all the fantastic designs.

Finding a blanket that suits your personal style is incredibly simple. You can opt for a one-of-a-kind artwork, a vibrant design that catches attention, or a subtle and plain solid color.

I have a blanket that is the perfect size for one person and it has a beautiful design showcasing Zion National Park. The design includes a complete illustration of Zion Canyon created by an artist. Being from Utah, this blanket holds a special place in my heart and reminds me of home no matter where I am.

During the winter in northern Utah, I have been trying out this blanket. I have mainly used it when going snowshoeing and ski touring in the Wasatch mountains. It's the first time I have brought a blanket with me during winter mountain outings, and I have really enjoyed being able to spread it out on the snow. It's great to be able to relax, take off my boots, and have lunch with a warm drink.

I've been amazed by the effectiveness of this blanket in providing insulation against the snow or cold ground beneath you.

If you're planning to sleep outside, this lightweight blanket is not a suitable substitute for a full sleeping bag when camping at high altitudes or in colder conditions. However, it will provide enough warmth for a summer camping trip.

In terms of comfort, I would suggest this blanket. It has a smooth texture and is extremely light. While it may not provide an excessively soft and fluffy feel like a minky throw blanket, this is actually beneficial. Fluffier blankets tend to attract dirt and would not be suitable for outdoor use as they would quickly become dirty.

In my opinion, I enjoy the sleek and smooth texture of the fabric that resembles a sleeping bag. However, when I become too warm, it can start feeling sticky. For individuals using it at home, they might find it too slippery or plastic-like for their liking.

The durability of the Original Puffy Blanket has been tested by me over the past few months. Although I cannot provide extensive feedback on its long-term durability, I have subjected it to rigorous use to assess its resilience.

The fabric used in this product is made of a smooth polyester material that is resistant to getting caught on rocks or bushes. Despite being thin and lightweight, it has shown no signs of damage and has proven to be unexpectedly durable. Even though I tend to be rough with my gear, I have used this fabric as a picnic blanket on rough, rocky surfaces and it has held up well, which is a good indication of its quality.

There are a few things you should be cautious of when using this camping blanket. Firstly, be mindful of campfire sparks, as they can potentially cause damage to the blanket. Secondly, avoid cactus spines, as they can also puncture the fabric. Lastly, refrain from using the blanket as a makeshift sled, as it may not be sturdy enough to withstand such activities. It's important to note that the thin fabric is not highly durable and may tear if it becomes snagged on sharp

In the event that you find a tear or hole in your item, using a piece of Tenacious Tape will easily fix it.

The Rumpl blanket stands out to me because the company has put a lot of thought and effort into making even the smallest aspects of the design functional and easy to use. This level of attention to detail is typically found in high-quality adventure gear, so it's impressive to see it applied to a product meant for everyday use.

The standout feature of this camping blanket is the cape clip, which allows you to fasten the blanket around yourself while leaving your hands free. This is particularly useful for staying warm and comfortable while preparing meals or simply relaxing on cool evenings during a camping adventure.

This is how the process functions. Along one of the longer sides of the blanket, there are two distinct points for attaching it: a strip of webbing with two small buckles and a small loop made of webbing. You place the blanket over your shoulders, pass one of the buckles through the loop, and then secure the buckles together by clipping them.

After arranging it properly, this arrangement functions efficiently. By attaching the blanket around your shoulders, you are able to perform tasks such as cooking breakfast, enjoying a cup of coffee, or tending to a campfire without obstruction from the blanket.

The puffy blanket is coated with DWR (durable water-repellant coating) on its outer shell. It's important to note that the blanket is not fully waterproof. The DWR treatment allows it to repel some water, such as splashes or brief encounters with rain (making it suitable for running from your tent to your car without getting wet). However, if you place it on a puddle, it will eventually absorb the water.

The polyester fabric used in this product has a smooth texture and is treated with DWR to prevent stains and make it easy to clean. If the blanket gets dirty, it can be easily brushed or wiped clean, removing anything from trail dust to pet hair.

There are small loops made of paracord sewn into the edging of the blanket at each of its four corners. According to Rumpl, these loops serve the purpose of allowing you to secure the corners of the blanket by staking them down. Initially, I believed this feature was just a marketing ploy, but during a recent trip, I had to chase after the blanket when a strong gust of wind pulled it across a frozen lake. As a result, I am now reevaluating the usefulness of these corner loops.

Will I start carrying tent stakes for every picnic in the future? Most likely not, but I do admire the effort put into the design.

Rumpl provides the Original Puffy Blanket in three various sizes: junior, single-person, and double-person options.

Dimensions

In my experience, the single-person size of this item is incredibly adaptable and suitable for a wide range of activities. It comfortably accommodates two individuals who can either sit or lie on it, while also providing complete coverage and warmth for a single person.

It is important to mention that although these fluffy blankets can be packed into their own storage bag, they do not compress as much as I anticipated. Therefore, if you plan to bring one on a hike, be prepared for it to occupy a significant amount of space in your backpack.

The one-person blanket weighs 2.1 lbs, making it a lightweight option that won't be burdensome during a day hike. However, it is still heavier compared to ultralight down sleeping bags and quilts. Alternatively, there is also a down version available that is more expensive but offers nearly a pound of weight savings.

If you need a sleeping quilt for your backpacking trips, I suggest opting for a lighter and more compact option such as an ultralight quilt.

There is a wide variety of excellent camping blankets available, and Rumpl is known to be quite expensive compared to other blankets. If you are looking for a more cost-effective option or simply want to explore different choices, here are my top recommendations for alternatives to Rumpl.

The REI Co-Op Outdoor Blanket is a budget-friendly option for those seeking an alternative to the expensive Rumpl blanket. While it may not provide the same level of warmth or possess all the luxurious features, it is still highly functional and built to last.

This blanket has two different sides. On one side, it is made of a special type of polyester that is resistant to water and is also ripstop, meaning it is less likely to tear. On the other side, it is made of a soft material called micro fleece. You can choose to put the side that is resistant to

If you like the idea of a blanket made with a softer material, then this option might be a better choice compared to the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket. It offers the advantages of both options, allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds.

The ALPS Mountaineering Wavelength Blanket is a competitor to Rumpl, as it shares similar materials and design elements. It is constructed with a durable ripstop nylon outer shell and features TechLoft Silver polyester insulation.

When comparing the smooth and silky polyester shell of the Rumpl blanket to the Wavelength Blanket's nylon fabric, the latter has a softer and more cotton-like texture. While some individuals may prefer this softer feel, it does make the Wavelength Blanket less durable against dirt, water, pet hair, and snags.

The Rumpl blanket stands out from this other blanket due to its unique features. In my opinion, the Rumpl cape clip, which allows you to use it hands-free, is truly revolutionary.

The Rumpl Down Puffy Blanket is the ultimate camping blanket that offers superior performance. It incorporates the smart features and design of the Original Puffy Blanket, while also providing the lightweight and easily packable insulation of down material.

The price of this blanket is approximately double that of the synthetic version. However, it provides slightly more warmth, is one pound lighter, and can be compressed into a smaller size when packed into its roll-top stuff sack.
