During my childhood camping excursions, I have vivid memories of my parents never forgetting to pack an ancient forest green REI fleece blanket. This blanket has experienced many adventures throughout the years, ranging from being used during outdoor picnics on dusty trails to providing shelter during intense hail storms, and even sustaining burn holes from campfire embers.
The advancements in technology, materials, and design over time have been significant, especially when compared to the time when that particular blanket was made. However, I hold a deep emotional attachment to that blanket due to the countless memories it holds. It has been a constant companion throughout all of my
The ideal outdoor blanket should be able to provide warmth, be easy to pack, have long-lasting durability, and be simple to clean. The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket was specifically created to incorporate cutting-edge materials and construction techniques used in the outdoor gear industry, aiming to create the perfect blanket for everyday use.
In order to evaluate this puffy blanket, I decided to bring it along with me on various outdoor expeditions. I tested it out during activities like snowshoeing and easy ski touring in the Wasatch Mountain Range, as well as winter camping in red rock deserts. Throughout these experiences, I thoroughly examined its performance and durability.
In this review of the Rumpl Blanket, I will provide an unbiased evaluation of this cozy blanket based on my personal experience using it. I will discuss its strengths, weaknesses, and whether it would be a worthwhile investment for your upcoming outdoor trip.
Initial thoughts on the Rumpl blanket were positive as I took it out of its packaging. The surface of the blanket made from woven polyester felt incredibly smooth and had a luxurious, frictionless texture. It closely resembled the fabric used in modern down sleeping bags, which is not surprising since these blankets are designed to incorporate elements from high-quality outdoor equipment.
The blanket arrived neatly packaged in a special sack made just for it. I appreciate that the sack has the same pattern as the blanket itself. However, it's important to keep in mind that you won't be able to roll it back up as neatly as it was originally. I've discovered that it's much simpler to just stuff it directly into the sack without bothering to fold or roll it.
The Rumpl blanket is specifically promoted as a blanket suitable for outdoor activities such as camping, picnics, and concerts. Its design clearly reflects this purpose. The blanket stands out for its ability to provide warmth, resist water, and be easily packed and cleaned, making it a durable option for outdoor use.
This blanket may not be everyone's preference for use at home, and some individuals may find it difficult to justify the high cost of a seemingly ordinary blanket. However, this blanket is specifically designed for those who desire a superior option compared to a regular picnic blanket, ensuring durability and suitability for outdoor activities.

Who is Rumpl?
Rumpl is a company that was founded with the concept of incorporating the advanced materials and design features of outdoor equipment into a blanket suitable for various activities. The idea was inspired by the experience of the company's founders, who found themselves stuck in their van during a ski and surf trip and had to rely on their sleeping bags to keep warm until assistance arrived.
The concept of a "sleeping bag blanket" was inspired by this particular experience. It involves incorporating advanced materials typically used in outdoor gear into a design that is specifically optimized for regular, everyday usage.
Established in 2014, Rumpl has a goal of revolutionizing the blanket industry by combining advanced materials and creative designs. Their top-selling item is the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket.
I appreciate how this brand is dedicated to promoting sustainability and minimizing their negative effects on the environment. It is common for outdoor gear production to harm the very places we enjoy exploring. However, an increasing number of brands are acknowledging this irony and are making efforts to decrease waste and enhance transparency in their business practices.
Rumpl contributes 1% of its total revenue (excluding profit) to environmental non-profit organizations. Additionally, in 2019, they completely redesigned their entire range of products to be made entirely from recycled materials.
In assessing the effectiveness of the Original Puffy Blanket, it is crucial to remember its intended purpose. This particular blanket is specifically crafted using advanced materials to create a practical and versatile outdoor blanket suitable for everyday use.
This item is not a super soft blanket that you would typically keep on your couch. Likewise, it is not an extremely lightweight quilt that you would take with you on long backpacking trips. Instead, it falls somewhere in the middle and is most suitable for casual outdoor activities.
I have discovered that this blanket is perfect for keeping in the car, making it easily accessible for picnics, car camping, outdoor concerts, or as an additional layer during chilly morning drives.
The blanket is constructed with a 30-denier ripstop polyester outer shell. It is made from the same material on both sides, resembling the fabric commonly used in modern sleeping bags. The material is thin, smooth, and lightweight.
The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket utilizes a synthetic insulation made of hollow fibers to provide warmth. While not as light or easy to pack as down, synthetic insulation is more effective when exposed to moisture and is also more affordable. However, if you prefer the lightweight features of down fill, Rumpl offers a down puffy blanket at a higher price point.
The blanket is constructed using recycled materials from both the outer shell and the insulation. Rumpl claims that the one-person blanket is made from 60 water bottles, while the two-person version uses 100. Personally, I make an effort to purchase products that are made from recycled or sustainable materials, so it's really satisfying to see that this blanket aligns with my values.
The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket offers a captivating aesthetic with its extensive selection of colors and designs. It's truly enjoyable to explore the multitude of options available, as you can easily get lost in the wide variety of captivating designs.
Finding a blanket that suits your personal style is incredibly effortless. You can opt for a one-of-a-kind artwork, a bold design that grabs attention, or even a subtle solid color, depending on your preferences.
I have a blanket that is designed specifically for one person and it has the beautiful Zion National Park design on it. The design showcases an artist's interpretation of Zion Canyon and covers one side of the blanket. Being from Utah myself, this blanket brings a sense of familiarity and comfort whenever I take it with me on my travels.
Comfort
Throughout the winter in northern Utah, I have been evaluating this blanket. It has been primarily utilized during my snowshoeing and ski touring expeditions in the Wasatch mountains. Prior to this, I had never taken a blanket with me into the mountains during the winter season. However, I have thoroughly enjoyed the luxury of being able to spread it out on the snow. This has allowed me to relax, remove my boots, and relish in a leisurely lunch accompanied by a warm drink.
I have been amazed by the effectiveness of this blanket in providing insulation against the snow or cold ground beneath you.
When it comes to sleeping outside, this lightweight blanket is not a suitable substitute for a complete sleeping bag when camping in high altitudes or colder temperatures. However, it is sufficient to provide warmth during a summer camping excursion.
In terms of comfort, I would suggest this blanket. It has a smooth texture and is lightweight, making it pleasant to use. However, it should be noted that it is not an extremely soft minky throw blanket, as that would not be suitable for its intended purpose. Ultra-soft blankets tend to attract dirt easily, which would not be ideal for outdoor use.
In my opinion, I enjoy the smooth and sleek feel of the fabric, which resembles a sleeping bag. However, if I become too warm, it can become sticky to the touch. For those using it at home, some individuals might find it too slippery or plastic-like for their liking.
Durability
I have been using the Original Puffy Blanket for a few months, though it is still too early to provide extensive feedback on its long-term durability. However, I have extensively tested its durability by subjecting it to rigorous use.
The fabric used in this product is made of 30-denier ripstop polyester, which feels very smooth and effectively prevents snags from occurring on rocks or bushes. Despite its thin and lightweight nature, the fabric has shown no signs of wear so far and has proven to be unexpectedly durable. As someone who tends to put gear through tough conditions, I have even used it as a picnic blanket on rough and rocky surfaces, which is a positive indication of its quality.
There are a few things that you should be cautious of when using this camping blanket, such as sparks from the campfire, prickly cactus spines, and the temptation to use it as a sled. The material of the blanket is not very strong and can easily tear if it gets snagged on something sharp. However, if you can manage to avoid these risks, I believe that this blanket will remain durable and serve you well for a long period of time.
In the event that you do encounter a puncture or tear, using a piece of Tenacious Tape will easily repair it without any issues.
I appreciate how Rumpl has put effort into considering every aspect of the design of their puffy blanket, making it highly functional and easy to use. This level of attention to detail is usually expected in high-quality adventure gear, so it's impressive to see it applied to a product meant for everyday use.
The standout feature of this camping blanket is the cape clip, which allows you to fasten the blanket around yourself while still having your hands free. This is particularly useful for staying warm while preparing meals or simply relaxing on cold evenings while camping.
The process is as follows. The blanket has two attachment points on one of its long edges: a piece of webbing with two small buckles and a small webbing loop. You place the blanket over your shoulders, insert one of the buckles through the loop, and then fasten the buckles together.
After you arrange it properly, this arrangement functions exceptionally. By fastening the blanket around your shoulders, you are able to have your hands available to prepare breakfast, enjoy a cup of coffee, or tend to a campfire.
The puffy blanket is designed with an outer shell that has a durable water-repellant coating called DWR. It's important to note that the blanket is not entirely waterproof. The DWR treatment helps it repel some water from splashes or brief encounters with rain (making it suitable for a quick run from your tent to your car), but if you place it directly on a puddle, it will absorb the water.
The polyester fabric used in this blanket is incredibly smooth and has been treated with a DWR coating. This treatment not only adds stain resistance to the blanket but also makes it very easy to clean. If the blanket does get dirty, you can simply brush or wipe off any type of dirt or even pet hair that may have accumulated on it
There are little loops made of paracord sewn into the edges of the blanket at each of the four corners. According to Rumpl, these loops serve the purpose of allowing you to secure the corners of the blanket. Initially, I thought this feature was just a marketing tactic, but during a recent trip, I had to chase after the blanket when a strong gust of wind pulled it across a frozen lake. As a result, I am now reevaluating the usefulness of these loops.
Will I remember to bring tent stakes with me on all future picnics? Most likely not, but I do acknowledge and value the effort put into the design.
Rumpl provides the Original Puffy Blanket in three varying sizes: junior, designed for a single person, and two-person.
The size of the product is highly versatile and ideal for various activities. It comfortably accommodates two individuals, allowing them to sit or lie on it. Additionally, it completely wraps around one person, providing warmth and insulation.
It is important to mention that although these fluffy blankets can be packed into their own storage bag, they do not compress as much as I had anticipated. If you plan on bringing one on a hike, be prepared for it to occupy a significant portion of space in your backpack.
The weight of the one-person blanket is only 2.1 lbs, making it a lightweight option that won't burden you during a day hike. However, it is still heavier than ultralight down sleeping bags and quilts. Alternatively, you have the option to purchase the down version of the blanket, which is more expensive but offers a weight reduction of nearly a pound.
If you are searching for a sleeping quilt suitable for backpacking, I suggest opting for an ultralight quilt that is both lighter in weight and more compact for easy packing.
There are many excellent camping blankets available aside from Rumpl, and Rumpl blankets are generally more expensive than other options. If you're looking for a more affordable alternative or simply want to explore other choices, here are my recommended alternatives to Rumpl.
If you're searching for a less expensive option compared to the Rumpl, REI offers a highly practical outdoor blanket that comes at a reasonable price. While it may not provide the same level of warmth as the Rumpl and lacks some of its advanced features, it still effectively serves its purpose and is highly resilient.
This blanket has two different sides. On one side, there is a ripstop polyester material that is resistant to water. On the other side, there is a soft micro fleece material. You can choose to lay the water-resistant side on the ground while enjoying the comfort of the soft fleece side.
If you have a preference for a more gentle and comfortable material in a blanket, this option might be more suitable for you compared to the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket, as it offers the advantages of both types.
The Wavelength Blanket by ALPS Mountaineering is a strong competitor to Rumpl, as it shares similar materials and design features. This blanket is constructed with a durable ripstop nylon outer shell and insulated with TechLoft Silver polyester.
When comparing the Rumpl's polyester shell, which is smooth and silky, to the Wavelength Blanket's nylon fabric, the latter has a softer texture that resembles cotton. While some individuals may prefer this softer feel, it does make the Wavelength Blanket less durable against dirt, water, pet hair, and snags.
The Rumpl blanket stands out from this other blanket because of its unique features. One of the standout features is the Rumpl cape clip, which allows you to use the blanket hands-free. In my opinion, this feature is a game-changer.
The Rumpl Down Puffy Blanket is the ultimate camping blanket that offers exceptional performance. It combines the smart features and design of the Original Puffy Blanket with the added benefit of being lightweight and easily packable, thanks to its down insulation.
The price of this blanket is approximately double that of the synthetic version. However, it provides slightly more warmth, weighs one pound less, and can be compressed into a smaller size when packed into its roll-top stuff sack.
