Here are some notable objects that are worth viewing at the Bihar Museum in Patna.
The Didarganj Yakshi is a renowned sculpture that is highly regarded in Bihar. It depicts a Yakshi, a female nature spirit, holding a whisk in her hand. In the past, this sculpture was prominently displayed at the Patna Museum, but it now occupies a similar prominent position at the Bihar Museum.
The exhibit can be found in the specially designed area on the ground level. Visitors have the opportunity to freely move around and admire the artwork from various perspectives. The stone's gleaming appearance is truly captivating, as well as the artist's attention to detail in depicting accurate body proportions.
I often ponder about the level of beauty the person being whisked by the whisk holder must possess, considering how beautiful the whisk holder itself is. Unfortunately, we can only imagine the answer to this question. The person being referred to is sculpted from soft Chunar sandstone and dates back to the ancient era of the Mauryas.
The Bihar Museum houses a collection of Buddha images. Bihar is known for its association with Buddha, as he spent a significant portion of his life in this region and achieved enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. As a result, there are numerous statues and images of Buddha from various time periods that can be found in this area.
Within this space, there exists a plethora of stone and metal statues that one can appreciate. Personally, I find the most captivating to be the immense sculpture depicting the Bhumi Sparsh Mudra, a gesture symbolizing the connection between the earth and enlightenment. The surrounding backdrop effectively recreates the surrounding forest, transporting you to that specific moment in time and space.
Don't forget to check out the metal Standing Buddha statues, as they are also a noteworthy sight to see.

The art of paper mache is a popular form of artistic expression in Bihar. This particular artwork showcases a larger-than-life sculpture made from paper mache, depicting a folk deity known as Matrika.
The image depicts two women standing back to back while holding a child. I was informed that similar images can be observed in the rural areas of Bihar. However, during my visits, I did not come across any such images. We can only hope that this tradition is not disappearing.
In addition to that, there are wall paintings that are three-dimensional and created using paper mache.

Assume the role of a member of the Mauryan royal family. Patna, also known as Pataliputra, served as the grand capital of the powerful Mauryan empire. The Bihar Museum attempts to recreate this historical landmark as accurately as possible.

The Brahmi script is a form of ancient writing that is not widely understood by most people. It contains the secrets and knowledge of the past within its unique characters. When we encounter the Brahmi script, it signifies an inscription or a message that our ancestors have passed down to us. In a sense, these scripts act as capsules that allow us to travel back in time and connect with our history.

The ancient Nalanda University, which is currently in ruins and made of red bricks, has been reconstructed. During the excavation process, numerous statues, known as Murtis, were discovered within the niches of the university's walls. These statues are now exhibited at the ASI Site museum, which is located near the site. Visitors have the opportunity to view old photographs from the time of the excavation.
The Bihar Museum has reconstructed the niches and displayed both replicas and original Murtis (sculptures) inside them. This allows visitors to easily imagine and comprehend what Nalanda used to look like in the past. I have vivid memories of the stunning Vishnu Murtis made of gleaming polished stone.
Bihar is known for its reverence towards the sun, making it a unique place where the tradition of worshipping the sun, known as Chhath Puja, is still practiced. Sun temples can be found throughout various regions of Bihar.
Some villages have discovered Surya Murtis in their village ponds or during unplanned excavations. A collection of impressive Surya Murtis can be viewed at the Bihar Museum in Patna.
There is a large sculpture that depicts the Sun riding on a chariot pulled by seven horses. To recognize the Surya Murti sculpture, look for a male figure holding two fully bloomed lotus flowers in its hand. Another distinguishing feature is the presence of large gum boots and the seven horses.
In addition to viewing sculptures, you can also observe the life-sized stone Matrikas on the first floor.
